Birth Name: Ava Lavinia Gardner
Born on December 24, 1922 in Smithfield, North Carolina, US
Died on January 25, 1990 in London, England

The daughter of a poor Southern sharecropper, Gardner attended local school and at age 18 went to New York City, where she took a screen test. Her extraordinary beauty won her a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios. In Hollywood she received acting and diction lessons while playing bit roles in a score of minor motion pictures in the 1940s. Her first important role was opposite Burt Lancaster in The Killers (1946), and she went on to starring roles in such films as The Hucksters (1947), One Touch of Venus (1948), Show Boat (1951), The Snows of Kilimanjaro (1952), and The Barefoot Contessa (1954). Her husky voice and seductive personal presence had made her one of the best-known American actresses by the early 1950s. But Gardner was not content to be typecast as a "sex symbol," and her sensitive characterizations in such pictures as Mogambo (1953), Bhowani Junction (1956), On the Beach (1959), and The Night of the Iguana (1964) received critical praise. She was nominated for an Academy Award in 1953 for her performance opposite Clark Gable in Mogambo. Gardner left Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1958 and became an independent actress. She continued to appear in films through the 1960s and '70s, though usually in less-important roles than before. Gardner's typical screen persona was that of an earthy, free-spirited, and irreverent woman of the world. She was married three times, to the actor Mickey Rooney, the bandleader Artie Shaw, and the singer Frank Sinatra.

Wayne Gardner is one of the premier identities in the history of Australian motorsport. Now in his fourth season as owner/driver of Coca-Cola Racing with a new chapter of four-wheeled success adding to his remarkable winning history on two wheels.

Formation of his own Coca-Cola Racing Holden touring car team has given the Wollongong whiz the opportunity to enhance a typically gutsy and determined climb to the top of world motor sport.

Wayne worked as an apprentice fitter and turner in his home town of Wollongong, NSW, when he commenced his motorcycle road racing career in 1976.

The talented teenager quickly established himself as one of Australia's top riders. He won the prestigious Castrol Six Hour race in 1980 before quitting his job to chase a full-time professional ride in Europe.

Wayne was a sensation!

He won his first race in the UK in 1981 and signed to compete full-time in UK championships with Honda Britain in 1982.

He made his 500cc grand prix debut the following year before grabbing the coveted factory Honda seat for 1986.

In 1987 Wayne became the first Australian ever to win the World 500cc motorcycle championship. In a remarkable season, he won seven races, with 10 pole positions and nine lap records.

He was named Sport Australia Sportsman of the Year for 1987, ABC Sportsman of the Year and made a Member of the Order of Australia for his achievement.

Wayne left an indelible mark on the minds of every Australian by then winning the inaugural Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island in 1989, after a thrilling battle with four of the worlds top riders.

His status as a national sporting hero was assured the following year when he repeated the victory, riding with a broken bone in his wrist and wrestling with a broken fairing which threatened to fall off at any moment.

Wayne announced his retirement from grand prix racing in 1992 after a series of bad falls and serious injuries, including two broken legs.

He bowed out in top form with a win in the 1992 British Grand Prix, capping an illustrious two-wheeled career that included 18 GP wins and a record-breaking four victories in the Suzuka 8 Hour endurance race in Japan.

Wayne commenced his Australian touring car racing career in 1993 with the Holden Racing Team, quickly establishing himself as a forceful front-runner and upsetting a few established stars along the way.

By season's end he was a major force, finishing an excellent third in the Tooheys 1000 at Bathurst before winning the Touring Car Challenge at the Adelaide GP.

The 1994 season saw the Coca-Cola Racing Commodores constantly in the top ten on the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship trail, but the new-kids-on-the-block were more often than not on the receiving end of the old guard's bumper bars.

In 1995 Wayne’s Coca-Cola Racing team was the most successful outfit at Bathurst with Wayne and Neil Crompton scoring third, while their back-up car driven by Brad Jones and Win Percy finished fifth in the Tooheys 1000.

At the 1996 AMP Bathurst 1000 Wayne and Neil drove their #7 Coke Commodore to fourth place, robbed of a podium finish by a controversial pace car incident 21 laps from home.

This year got off to a great start when Wayne rewarded his loyal team by winning the opening round of the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship at Calder Park Raceway.

In off-track activity, Wayne has expanded his successful touring car racing team to offer a range of exciting new after-market performance and fashion packs for VR and VS model Holden Commodores.
